How to calculate the diameter of beer lauter tank or Mash/Lauter tun
If we want to design a 1000L brewing system and brew a beer with 15 Plato
Roughly by formula, the malt weight is (15% x 1000kg) / (80% x 90%) ≈ 210kg
I. By unit load of false bottom
Dry malt milling, 140kg – 175kg/m2, let’s set 160kg/m2
So the false bottom S = 210/160=1.312m2
By formula: 1.312m2 = πR2, we can get the R = 0.646m
Then we can get the inner diameter of lauter tank is 1300mm
II. By grain depth
Considering the filter effect, generally the spent grain depth is 0.3m – 0.4m, let’s set 0.35m
If 210kg malt, the final spent grain volume is around 0.38m3
by formula: 0.38m3 = πR2 x 0.35m, we can get the R = 0.588m
Then we can get the inner diameter of mash/lauter tun is 1200mm
From the above different ways of calculation, we get 2 numbers. But it’s very close for home brewing
So about diameter of beer lauter tank, we need consider other factors
The beers; Malt type; Sugar Yield; Extract Efficiency; False bottom type…
Here we can exchange ideas for craft beer, also for tanks.
